Audiovox SMT5600 - Awesome new smartphone

October 19, 2004 2:24 PM

I've been holding out for a new cell phone for two years now, and I've finally found one that I think does everything I want: The AudioVox SMT5600, also known as the HTC Typhoon and Orange SPV C500.

Cool features:

  • Windows Media Player 10 - replaces my aging MP3 player (also plays videos).
  • Sync music, videos, email, contacts, tasks, games, applications, and more via USB and BlueTooth.
  • Mini-SD flash ram slot for up to 512 MB of removable storage.
  • Runs Windows Smartphone Edition, so lots of cool programs available, plus runs .NET programs as well.
  • Huge screen, so mobile Web browsing isn't too limiting. (
  • 2.2 inch, 176 x 220 pixels TFT LCD with 64K Colors)
  • Weighs less than 3.6 ounces
  • Dimensions - 4.24 x 1.82 x .69 inches - smallest smartphone in the world!
  • Built-in VGA camera with 4X digital zoom and video recording.
  • Recharge batteries via standard USB cable.

barf...sorry, I'm in the industry and the smartphones are still a miserable failure. Partly because the (real) handset manufacturers will not touch it. I have two sitting in front of me right now. People just want their phones that do a few things very well. This isn't the Microsoft way. I can see PDA users replacing their PDAs with smartphones, but no one else.

Hey Asher - I agree with you, and my hope is that I can customize the UI down to the few features I'll actually want to use all the time.

For example, the contact list doesn't show a photo of each of the people. With most phones you're without that feature, but with the Smartphone you can download an addon to add that kind of functionality. (I believe this one comes with that program).

I also like the MP3 player capabilities, and if it has bookmarking and playlist, I'll be saving an addition $200 on not buying an new MP3 player.

Photo Contacts add-on! Looks cool!

Scoble got it... And he really likes it!

Yes, leaving for work early tommorrow to try to get it! Every AT&T store here is sold out too, but they think they'll be getting more tommorow (Thursday).

Asher, I heard the same for mp3 players couple years ago when working for audio to go startup. And who is real handset developer? Motorola not? Sony Ericsson not?

Once it catch up everybody will want to play a game. Exactly as mp3 players world.

I got it! And i love it, i'll have blog entry with more detail soon.

This phone ROCKS! Buying the phone online is probably a good workaround if it's hard to find in stores; with new service you can get $50 off.

Thanks for the link to the AT&T forum - I had not seen it before.

The best Howard Forum for this phone is actually the Microsoft Smartphone forum:

Here's Modaco's topic for this phone, which is the best source of app compatibility information:

This phone is it. I got all the pda/phone's they sucked. This one is actually a really good phone and a great PDA.

I'm quite pleased with mine (from Orange), although Windows Media Player seems to scarf all the mp3s onto the playlist that it can find on the phone/card. Which is all very well, but I'd like the option of not listening to The Beach Boys immediately followed by Messiaen....

Has anyone managed to get playlists working at all? I can't seem to put a local directory in the Favourites bookmarks, and Media Player won't understand *.m3u files that I've dropped onto the storage card. I've tried installing Pocketmusic etc. but the phone complains that the software isn't for that particular version of Windows CE....

ok
